A giant stonefly or salmonfly (Pteronarchys californica or P. princeps). Mass emergences of these large stoneflies can be very impressive, and are often eagerly anticipated by fishermen. Stoneflies are an important indicator of water quality, as their larvae can only survive in clean water.
