Hopeful Stare

[500px Index #: 5-0056] DESCRIPTION: One of four new lion cubs at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington gazes with focused interest into the space beyond his enclosure. It was a school day so lots of field trippers running here and there...maybe he was eyeing some potential snacks on the other side of the glass. SETTING: 4 October 2013 BASELINE IMAGE: RAW, Canon EOS 7D, Sigma 120-400mm F/4.5-5.6 AF APO DG OS HSM @ 400mm, f/9.5, 1/350 sec, ISO 1000, Auto Exposure Mode (really?, auto exposure? what a wimp...), Evaluative Metering, 0 EV, No Flash, Velbon UP-40 monopod, Manfrotto 3262QR ballhead PROCESSING: Baseline RAW capture was opened in Adobe Camera Raw and adjusted to taste for contrast, highlights, whites, clarity, vibrance and saturation. The resulting image was then opened in Photoshop CS6 where I applied the Cool Tone I preset in Topaz Labs Adjust 5 plugin to pop the color, followed by detail enhancement with the Topaz In Focus 64 plugin to combat the softness of the lens I was using which manifests itself when pushed all the way out. After reducing the image size and resolution for web posting I added mild sharpening with Photoshop's unsharp mask filter and a final tweak with a brightness/contrast layer in photoshop.
