Lioness in Naboisho Conservancy, Masai Mara, Kenya. This iconic, red-listed species is threatened and declining. At only 20,000-30,000 individuals left in the wild, this is a tenth of their numbers a century ago and it's getting worse.

This male Ruby-Crowned Kinglet (Regulus calendula) is nearly dwarfed by a cluster of dried seed pods on a small tree in a marsh on Lake Conroe, Texas. To give a sense of proportion, these pods range from 2.5 to 3 inches long.

Waiting for Death
